12th September 2015: Three anniversaries for the Philharmonic Society of Corfu
The year 2015 marks three anniversaries in the history of music in modern Greece. The earliest one dates back to 1815, when in early February the music of Niccolo Manzaro was first performed before the audience of the theatre of Corfu. It was this first performance that signalled the systematic cultivation of music in Greece. The year 2015 also marks the 150th anniversary of the adoption of the Greek national anthem. In specific, on 10th July 1865, the two first stanzas of the poem ‘Hymn to Liberty’, set to music by Niccolo Manzaro, were officially adopted as the national anthem of Greece. Finally, by 12th September 2015, the Philharmonic Society of Corfu will have operated as an educational institution in music studies for 175 years, contributing invariably to the advancement of the art of music not only in the Ionian Islands but in Greece in general. The Philharmonic Society of Corfu, being inevitably linked to all three of the above mentioned anniversaries, feels the obligation to commemorate them. Besides celebrating the 175 years from the day it was founded, we should also honour Niccolo Manzaro, as he is directly connected to the Philharmonic Society of Corfu –he was not only the first artistic director (1841-1872), but also the one who, two decades earlier, had identified the importance of establishing an educational institution in music studies in Corfu and worked hard to prepare its foundation. Niccolo Manzaro is also inextricably linked to the Greek national anthem, which he set to music at various stages. The Philharmonic played an important role in establishing it in the hearts and minds of people as the ‘Hellenic Anthem’, as it had been performed by its wind and choral ensembles since 1841. The Philharmonic Society of Corfu is, therefore, indeed the common ground of the three anniversaries. For this reason, events commemorating the triple anniversary, composed of three lectures and a concert, have been scheduled for 12th September –the day it was founded 175 years ago. The lectures, moderated by the Professor Haris Xanthoudakis, will be delivered by musicologists and researchers and they will reveal unexplored aspects of these landmarks in the history of music in modern Greece. In specific, Kostas Zervopoulos’ lecture will focus on the relationship between Manzaro and Solomos’ poem ‘Hymn to Liberty’ on the one hand and the adoption of the latter as the Greek national anthem on the other. Dimitris Brovas will comment on features of recently recorded Manzaro’s works, from the period spanning between 1815 and 1827. Finally, Kostas Kardamis will disprove a series of ‘urban legends’ about the foundation of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu based on historical documents. The events will culminate in a concert with Manzaro’s works, given by the music ensembles and the concert band of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu. The triple anniversary events will take place on 12th September 2015 at the Concert Hall of the Philharmonic Society of Corfu (10, Nikiforou Theotoki Str.) at 19.00. Admission is free to the audience.
